ESTAURAR UN MUEBLE VIEJO NO ES LO MISMO QUE TRANSFORMARLO, DE MANERA INESPERADA, SACANDO PROVECHO DE SU ORIGEN . ASÍ FUE COMO ERIKA WINTERS ENCONTRÓ UNA FORMA PERSONAL DE CONVERTIR EL RESICLAJE EN OBRAS DE ARTE.
Una vitrina de árboles con espuma fosforescente fue el primer contacto con Erika, y es un hecho que sabe como llamar la atención hacia su trabajo. Estudió diseño de interiores y hoy está segura de que su vocación es recoger muebles, incluso de la calle, para que fluya su personalidad a través de ellos y rediseñarlos. Desde niña imaginaba historias a partir de muebles de décadas pasadas, sólidos y enormes, que narraban la identidad de su familia. ERES platicó con ella sobre como llegó a crear su propio sello.
Restoring an old piece of furniture is different to giving it a quirky redesign and making the most of its past. This is how Erika found her very own way of recycling to create works of art.
The backdrop for my introduction to Erika was a display window of trees coated in phosphorescent foam. She is an expert at attracting attention to her work. She studied interior design and is now sure that her vocation is collecting furniture – sometimes even from the street – which she redesigns by adding her personal touch. From a young age she imagined stories crafted from the solid and massive furniture from previous eras that told her family history. ERES talked with her about how she managed to create her own style.
ERES: ¿ Como surgió el concepto de Erika Winters Design?
ERIKA: Empecé a recoger muebles para arreglarlos por el simple gusto de expresarme, al mismo tiempo pensé como vivir de eso que tanto me gustaba hacer. Seguí mi intuición y comencé a observar , a saber ver lo que estaba pasando en ese momento con los muebles. Y me di cuenta de que en Europa existe una cultura de retomar antigüedades o que un anticuario los restaure para venderlo, sin embargo esto nada tenía que ver con mi propuesta, en la que reinterpreto un mueble para hacerlo contemporáneo.
ERES: How was the Erika Winters Design concept born?
Erika: I began collecting furniture to fix it up just for the pleasure of expressing myself. At the same time I began to wonder how to make a living from doing something I enjoyed so much. I followed my intuition and began to observe and I trained my eye to see what was happening at that time with furniture and I realized that in Europe there is a culture of people picking up antiques, or of antique dealers restoring them to be resold. However, this is completely different to my work. I reinterpret furniture to make it contemporary.
E: ¿Cómo detectaste tu público?
E: Por mi experiencia , me di cuenta de que había que atacar el mercado gay extranjero, porque tienen una necesidad de identificarse con lo femenino, son más sensibles y tienen el poder adquisitivo para comprar una pieza con historia, trabajo y reinterpretación. Los gays europeos valoran la historia y entienden mi trabajo, basta decir que mi primer cliente fue un francés. Después el abanico se fue ampliando hacia inmigrantes españoles, argentinos y brasileños en el DF. Contraté a u diseñador gráfico y después de mucho platicar, diseñó mi imagen y mi página de Internet porque desde hace ocho años me di cuneta de su alcance a nivel mundial, además de que esta ciudad es muy complicada y através de la web no desperdicias el tiempo de tus clientes.
E: How did you discover your market?
E: Through my experience, I realized that I should be targeting homosexuals from other countries because they need to identify with femininity, and they are more sensitive and have the disposable income to buy something historical and created with craftsmanship and through reinterpretation.
European homosexuals value history and understand my work. My first client was French. He was followed by a variety of Spanish, Argentinean and Brazilians in Mexico City. I hired a graphic designer and after much deliberation I designed my image and website because eight years ago I realized my work’s international scope, and also since this city is difficult to move around in I don’t want to make my clients make unnecessary trips.
E: ¿Cómo logras vender tu creatividad?
E: Primero te la tienes que creer y estar seguro de que tu trabajo vale y es único; debe reflejar lo que tú eres. Lo que ves en mi página soy yo, no hay otra igual. Cuando te plantas frente al cliente con seguridad y ve que dominas el tema, te estás vendiendo a ti y no a un mueble o una marca.
E: How do you sell your creativity?
E: First of all, you have to believe in it and be confident that your work has value and is unique; it must reflect your personality. What you see on my website is me, no-one else is the same. When you are sitting across from your client with confidence and he sees that you know your stuff, you are selling yourself rather than a piece of furniture or a brand.
Regalar para fluir
La idea de lo que significa regalo es básico para Erika. Tiene que ver con conocer realmente al destinatario y no que éste te diga lo que quiere. Es complacer através de un presente, porque conoces a esa persona quieres buscarle algo especial. De esta misma manera Erika fluye en su trabajo, pues aunque hay un intercambio monetario, le dedica mucho tiempo a cada cliente para conocerlo y reinterpretar sus apegos materiales. A veces se siente como una psicóloga que trabaja en un hospital de muebles, incluso tiene una camioneta para rescatar de la calle todo tipo de “ huérfanos ”, como lo fue un sillón de tres plazas.
The Flow of Giving
Erika has a straightforward attitude to gifts. It is about really understanding the recipient, as opposed to him telling you what he wants. It is about giving pleasure with presents: you understand him so want to find him something special. This keeps her business flowing, because although money changes hands, she spends a long time with each client to get to know him and interpret his tastes in material objects. Sometimes she feels like a psychologist who works for a furniture hospital. She even has a small van to rescue all kinds of “orphans” from the street, such as with a three-seater sofa.

Tips de experta
• Tienes que hacerte de un equipo y tratarlos como personas, no verlos con un símbolo de pesos en la cara.
• Si logras que un cliente se identifique con tu propuesta, puedes terminar decorando toda su casa y asesorándolo en sus compras.
• Reutilizar puede ser una gran fuente de inspiración como todo lo que compone su línea Patchwork, en la que usó sobrantes de tela.
• Diversifica tus productos. Erika Winters Design incluye muebles, accesorios, interiorismo y hasta decoración navideña.
• Mantener buenas relaciones públicas es importante. Erika es Vicepresidenta de Relaciones Públicas Región Centro de SMI, Sociedad Mexicana de interioristas, AC.
Expert Tips
• You have to form a bond with clients and treat them as human beings rather than seeing a peso sign on their heads.
• If you manage to get clients to identify with your proposal, you can end up decorating their whole house and advising them what to buy.
• Re-using can be a good source of inspiration, such as with her Puzzle line, in which she uses surplus patchwork fabrics.
• Diversify your products. Erika Winters Design offers furniture, accessories, interior decoration and even Christmas decorations.
• Good PR is key. Erika is Vice-President of the Mexican Interior Design Society (Central Region), the SMI.
Nuevas rutas
Su más reciente proyecto lleva el nombre de Bengala, y dará mucho de que hablar, pues está fabricada con yute hindú, una fibra natural que no se encuentra en México. Ahora está lista para distribuir sus piezas en Austin y Chicago con ayuda de la cooperativa Moodbox. Para ella, internacionalizarse siempre ha sido una prioridad, por eso acaba de viajar a Los Ángeles para sondear nuevos territorios, aparte de que la información en su página web es bilingüe.
New Projects
Erika’s most recent project is called Bengala and it’s going to make waves. It will use Indian burlap, a natural fiber not found in Mexico. She is now ready to distribute her work in Austin and Chicago with the help of the Moodbox cooperative. Erika has always had an international focus; she has just returned from Los Angeles to check out new ideas and her website is published in both English and Spanish.
